I have to say that they do indeed promote bad astronomy: they can't even get the phases of the Moon correct.
I avoided them five years ago because they were promoting climate crankism. Now, they've found other things to be cranks about. I cannot recommend them as knowing anything at all about astronomy. A few astronomers who don't mind ignoring the nutjobs occasionally post there.
Finally, their staff are bullies. Officious little pricks. Guardhouse lawyers. And they don't know any astronomy at all, as demonstrated by their lack of knowledge of the phases of the Moon.
The site is still a huge blot on Phil Plait's CV. I personally wouldn't bother with Plait or Discover on the evidence of this site. I still think he made a huge mistake allowing them to use Bad Astronomy. I suppose there's nothing he can do now.
At the supposed termination of the "temporary ban:" They imposed another ban. LOL. I'm off to other sites and this review will remain permanently. I have no time for officious pricks who don't know astronomy banning astronomers from the astronomy site.
There's no note of the extra ban time on the moderators' forum. This is typical of their nonprofessional approach; they don't even admit it when they extend a ban for spite.
I recommend avoiding places like this with spiteful staff who probably manage McDonalds' and hate the world. You won't discuss any astronomy there, unless you're a professional. It's useless to amateurs, and mostly useless to pros.
Latest. They claim I "violated the rules" for allowing someone to attack me for posting the phases of the Moon. Or something. They're kind of unclear on all that, you know, math, and technical stuff. Currently dubbed "bad lolstronomy."
Minus one Schneib for being a drag on Phil Plait's reputation.
Later: now they claim I can post there again. Of course that means only if I'm not mean and don't point out the phases of the Moon. Waiting for a response. Not interested in being kicked off because the staff doesn't know the phases of the Moon.
Update: Now they're telling me I got kicked off for laughing at this guy:
Yes, it would be even worse if I had suggested it would be in the West. But I can't help wondering how you feel about what I actually did say, that it could be in the South? Would you care to try the entire post again, with that new idea in mind? I'm talking about an actual experiment that can be done, and although we won't really do it, perhaps we can well imagine how it would turn out, if we can get the Moon imagined in the right place.
He just claimed the Moon's terminator runs East to West, in other words that the phases of the Moon move from North to South!

Yes, really. Yes, on a site that claims to be an astronomy site. Yes, because they think "being polite" is more important than science. Or, for that matter, simple reality.
Minus two more Schneibs for not supporting science while claiming to be an astronomy myth debunking site.
Meanwhile it appears Plait has completely dissociated himself from the site. I'm still going to write him; they may be lying again in order to avoid more consequences, and he should be aware of how his copyrighted phrase, "Bad Astronomy," is being tarnished and misused. It may turn out they're in violation of a contract by doing that and it may be taken away from them, which would be good since they're against science and astronomy.
Their big problem appears to be that they have users who have pretended to know astronomy, who are cranks.
ReplyDeleteThis is apparently due to their previous claims against global warming.
They remain anti-science and I cannot recommend them. I am moving on to other sites which don't just claim astronomy but actually do it.
You were suspended for three days after repeated warnings about your rude language and attitude. Nothing to do with Astronomy.
ReplyDeleteIf you follow the rules of the board (Number one is 'Be Nice') then you get suspended.
What do you expect?
After you let me be harassed for days by someone who doesn't know fourth grade math.
ReplyDeleteAs a "bad astronomy" site, you're a joke. As far as I can see none of the staff would know bad astronomy if it jumped up and bit you on the ass.
You're just as bad as you were when you were denying global warming.
Sorry, "Emily," you're not going to be permitted to post on blogs about other sites. If you have something to say say it on the appropriate blog entry.
ReplyDeleteIt's of course perfectly "nice" to let someone who doesn't know fourth grade math repeatedly make insulting claims about the real astronomer.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are unbelievable. What are you, a bunch of McDonald's employees who are mad at the world, taking it out on the astronomers and anybody else who knows more than you do? 'Cause that's how you look from over here.
As for what I expect, I expect the staff of the Bad Astronomy site to know bad astronomy when they see it and not kick people off for pointing it out.
ReplyDeleteInstead, the staff wants to beat up on real astronomers.
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to do that maybe you should call the site "Bad Manners" instead of "Bad Astronomy."
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'.
Where have any of the Mods made claims against Global Warming? Where have the Mods made any pronouncements about what is 'Bad astronomy'? It is the job of the Moderators to ensure people follow the rules and to keep things civil and structured in a way that allows those that have opinions and theories about Climate Change and bad Astronomy to explain their positions and debate them in a civilised manor.
ReplyDeleteIf you can't do that then you will be suspended or banned from the board. You haven't been singled out for your science, theories or beliefs, you were suspended for the way you conducted yourself. You are welcome back after your three day suspension if you are prepared to follow the rules of the board and are prepared to 'be nice'
Oh, so you got overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteSorry, dude, I'm on to the science forums. So far, they don't have chickensxxt staff who don't understand science. Unlike your forums which are RUN BY chickensxxt staff who don't understand astronomy.
You are a disgrace. You are an astronomy site that doesn't know the freaking phases of the moon for cryin' out loud. What are you thinking? I don't know, and I'm not wasting any time finding out in the presence of sites that value truth over popularity.
Please don't bother posting something on your site and assuming I ever knew about it; I simply won't be back. You failed miserably. You are cranks.
Just in case you don't know it, not knowing the phases of the Moon makes you look pretty ridiculous as far as "astronomy" web sites go. It's kind of like being the American History site that's never heard of Christopher Columbus.
ReplyDeleteOr Amerigo Vespucci.
ReplyDeleteLook dude you're perpetuating Bad Astronomy by supporting people who deny fourth-grade geometry.
ReplyDeleteI've said it. RAF has said it. It's why you keep seeking further and further crannies of the Internet to hide your shame.
I only care because I naively believe Phil Plait will eventually be embarrassed enough to show up and step on you.
